The Formosa Chemical Plant cleared a hurdle securing the right to the land they want to build the $9.4 billion dollar plant. The land is located in a poor and rural section of St James Parish and has been the site of demonstrations against the plant. The parish council ratified land use restrictions on the land granting 2400 acres near the Welcome area on the St James west bank with 5 of 7 members voting for the proposal.
Opponents will be taking this issue to court but it has the backing of the Governor, Parish President and other officials as an important economic development with a $120 million payroll, 1200 jobs and more than 8000 temporary jobs for the the construction.
Formosa has requirements on training, who to hire for the construction and will get a tax break.
