Pope Leo XIV spoke on October 1 at the international conference Raising Hope for Climate Justice, held to mark the tenth anniversary of the encyclical Laudato si’ (“Praised be to you”), issued by Pope Francis in 2015.
In his address, Pope Leo referenced the upcoming COP30 climate conference in Brazil this November, emphasizing the need for its agenda to focus on “hearing the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor — families, Indigenous peoples, involuntary migrants, and believers throughout the world.”
He underscored the importance of individuals and communities at local, regional, and national levels “putting pressure on governments to develop and enforce stronger regulations, procedures, and controls” in order to “mitigate the damage done to the environment.”
