Ready for some alphabet soup?
- GNOICC = Greater New Orleans Interfaith Climate Coalition
- ENO = Entergy New Orleans
- BCA = Bernhard Capital Associates, a venture capital firm
- DSU = Delta States Utilities, a subsidiary that BCA created
- CH4 = Methane
OK, now that we got that straight, here’s the news:
GNOICC (that’s us) has come out in opposition to the proposed sale of the ENO’s gas business to BCA and DSU because of CH4.
In a letter to the New Orleans City Council, GNOICC expressed concerns that the proposed sale would lead to a significant increase in the use of methane gas in New Orleans, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. The coalition argued that this would be a step in the wrong direction at a time when the city should be focused on transitioning to clean energy solutions.
“This proposal is not in the best interest of the City and its citizens,” said Pastor Gregory Manning, Chair and Founder of GNOICC. “If the Council supports this sale, it will be acting contrary to the best interests of the City and its citizens because approval of this sale will increase and accelerate the already catastrophic impact of climate change in and around the City of New Orleans.”
GNOICC urged the City Council to reject the proposed sale and instead focus on promoting clean energy solutions that will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Our coalition’s opposition to the sale is just one example of the growing movement to divest from fossil fuels and invest in clean energy. As the impacts of climate change become more severe, more and more people are realizing that we need to transition away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible.
